Escentric Molecules Bolshoi Stand, St. Petersburg

Client: Escentric Molecules
Commission: Escentric Molecules

Escentric Molecules approached Alexander Smith to collaborate on a display stand at a new store in St. Petersburg Russia. Alexander worked closely throughout 2014 alongside the creative director at Escentric Molecules to develop a whole 3D design language for Escentric Molecules' store furniture, developing concepts for corner units, table top pieces, window and wall units.

Designs for the Bolshoi store unit were completed and amended throughout 2014 and 2015 alongside consultation on materials and finishes, weight reduction (the finished unit in total weighs 1.3 tonnes), weight distribution, prototyping and general project management. In mid 2015 after generating a full production pack of drawings and specifications, Alexander's team of suppliers began production and in November 2015 Alexander oversaw the installation of the finished unit with his team on site in St. Petersburg in Russia.

The unit is designed to represent a 3D extrapolation of Escentric Molecules' 2D branding and design language. It is made from 12mm Corian slats stacked with spacers over a steel frame. Each horizontal panel is unique and is machined on a 3 axis CNC machine on both sides before finishing and polishing. LED lighting is inset into the thickness of each panel to illuminate product from above and below and add light to illuminate the back panel. The back panel is made from spray lacquered MDF slats. The steel sub frame cleverly shares the weight between the wall and the floor and provides a platform for the unit to be assembled upon. Brushed stainless steel tabs are inset into the front of each panel. The unit also includes storage for stock in the drawers at the base and air circulation management to stop the units LED transformers from overheating.
